History of Sigiria Rock Fortress

  • The rocky citadel and the adjacent garden complex is nearly 1600 years old, dating back to the 5th Century AD.
  • This Lion’s Fortress is an absolute and fine example of the sheer imagination of King Kashyapa who built his entire palace atop the hill and build a small city for his kingdoms. King Kashyapa installed scientific methods for building underground water reservoirs and gardens.
  • King Kashyapa’s life is packed with conspiracy and tragedy. He was the first-born son of the king Dhatusena. But Kashyapa was deprived of his rights as the rightful successor to the throne as he was born to the King’s concubine and was hence, considered illegal. His step-brother, Mogallana demanded the title of crown prince as his mother was the royal empress of King Dhatusena.
  • Kashyapa hated this, so he killed his father and took full control of the monarchy. Mogallana, be frightened for his life, escaped to India and Kashyapa crowned himself the King. But he was worried that his brother will return to attack him, so he decided to build his citadel and palace atop the gigantic lion-like designed rock. This is how, Sigiriya, the unconquerable citadel was come into existence.
  • King Kashyapa ruled from his safe palace for nearly 22 years till 495AD. His deep-seatedanxiety that his step-brother would return with an army and wage a war became a reality. Mogallana confronted the apparently unconquerable Sigiriya Fort, killed King Kashyapa and took over the kingdom.
